Can I TRUST You (I am your interviewer, new contact, old friend, etc.)
Can I TRUST You (I am your interviewer, new contact, old friend, etc.) I think LinkedIn has made the phrase know and trust more popular than it already was. I want to talk about TRUST. I was reading an article titled Google Keepâs Already Shaky Ground because I like to learn from (a) what Google is doing, and (b) what people think about it. I was struck by this line: And yet, Google thinks users will now trust our notes to its cloud, after previous shutdowns of similar services like Google Notebook or Google Bookmarks Lists? The message the author is saying is: why would trust Google with my valuable thoughts and notes and clips in their new service, supposedly like Evernote, when Ive trusted them before and THEY FAILED ME? In other words people are saying: I TRUSTED Google before, but when they announced they were shutting down services I used I lost some trust. And now they want me to trust them with other stuff? How long will it last? Lets bring this to YOU. As a job seeker, business owner, networker do you have integrity? If you say something, do people trust you? If you promise something, or endorse something, or introduce me to someone, can I TRUST you? If you are having problems networking, and you are doing the mechanics the right way, and your heart is in it (so, Im assuming you are doing all the right things), maybe your problem is TRUST. EITHER you havent established a relationship of trust with your connections, OR youve done something (or someone has said something) to chip away at that trust. If I can trust you Ill help you. If I cant trust you then I wont help you. BUILD TRUST. How do you do this? By having genuine, authentic relationships. But dont go and say you are genuine and authentic that makes a skeptic like me tend to not believe you. Build trust by being a good person. Do what you say you will. Go the extra mile. All those cliche things. But if you do them, and it becomes you, its not cliche. It is integrity. And I LOVE working with people who have integrity. Ill help them as much as I can. And you will too. Develop Yourself Build an Awesome Development Career
Develop Yourself Build an Awesome Development Career Back in the day, doctors and lawyers were considered the âcool kidsâ of the business block. Not anymore. These days, the world is much more interested in developers. If youâre even remotely interested in starting a successful career as a developer, then read on! Developing⦠what, exactly? A lot of people know what want to work in development. But do you know exactly what it is you want to develop? Itâs not quite as simple as âlearning to codeâ and then applying that knowledge to whatever project comes your way. The code you need to learn might depend on what it is you want to do. It will also change how you approach a given code. So what is it you want to develop? Software? Video games? Websites and, if so, the front-end or the back-end? The programming knowledge you need This is where a lot of people end up getting stuck. Itâs not that code is an aggressively difficult thing to learn. The problem lies in how difficult it can be to actually choose your first programming language! Many people start doing a few lessons on one language, then find themselves convinced they need to switch to another. As I implied earlier, the language you learn may be determined by what you want to pursue. If youâre looking at web development, then HTML, CSS, and JavaScript are must-haves. Game development will lean more towards C, C++, C#, and Python. Working with a wizard Okay, so maybe a better word to use here would be âmentorâ. But trust me when I say that great developers donât mind being referred to as wizards. If you know someone who can code, speak to them regularly. Get them to check your work. Talk to them about better solutions to your problems. Theyâll probably even know the best language for you to start with. No doubt they made a few mistakes when they were starting out. The best thing you can do is find out what those mistakes were so you can avoid them. Development environments The environment you use on your computer to build and test your programs is important. Theyâll often determine just how much you can do with the knowledge you have. This also means that theyâre important to know about during the learning stages of development. Actually learning to use these environments will give you a much broader picture of the development process. That experience will also look great on a resumé. Game developers will want to get trained in something like Unity. Developers of websites and apps will benefit from Visual Studio 2010 training. Building a portfolio One of the best ways to stand out among the other developers looking to start careers is to have a portfolio. A lot of businesses are looking to hire developers, but a lot of resumés just like too much alike! Work on some great projects in your spare time and upload them to the Internet. They donât need to go viral or anything (though that might help your prospects!). They just need to be there for the reference of potential employers. Image credits Main Dev Graphic Screen Visual

This is what it looks like to have a hard time making a change
This is what it looks like to have a hard time making a change Some days I look through old posts, reminding myself of posts that Ive written that I like and that I should link to. Often, this process serves to let me procrastinate writing while pretending to be engaged in writing. If I were a body builder, this would be me looking in the mirror instead of lifting weights. Yesterday I was trolling for posts, and I remembered this one, about hiring a babysitter. I never link to it because I cant read it. I get physically ill. It was a short, stinging moment during an absolutely terrible time in my life. But a part of me likes that sting. Im the kind of girl that picks scabs off just to feel like Im alive. So you can imagine that a blog post about how to sell is not rocking my world. Its true that Ive been thinking a lot about creating more stability in my life. But its also true that in the recent post about what I learned from sales guys, I should have told you that when I met one of those sales guys on a plane, I went to a hotel and had sex with him. I had never had a one-night stand and I thought I should know what its like. And it was terrible. I like picking scabs, but its very controlled. Its hard to control a one-night stand, and it was, actually, very scary and not fun at all. I want this blog to be somewhere in between a one-night stand with a sales guy and a five-point list of sales tips. In fact, I want my life to be that way as well. A few days ago I flew to LA to get my haircut. I know that sounds crazy, but remember that I live in the middle of Wisconsin. Also, my best friend, Sharon, is in LA, and she owns a hair salon, and shes been cutting my hair for 15 years. Before I was her free-haircut-friend, a cut and color with her was about $300. So I feel like the plane ticket, together with the free haircut, is somehow still a bargain. I go there on a day the salon is closed, and we do my hair and then spend the day hanging out in Santa Monica talking. At lunch, outside, with cars driving by, I tell Sharon I need a break. I need a vacation. I have been working absolutely insane hours for the last five years. I traveled so much that when I get on a plane now, I have panic attacks. She said, What would you do on vacation? Me: Id probably wake up, take the kids to school, go to the gym, write a blog post, and then work on whatever company I was percolating. And then pick the kids up at school. So I dont really want a vacation. I want breathing room. But not a vacation. To be honest, I still work at night. I am not sure why. I think because Im interested in what people are doing. In what Im doing. I dont want to miss anything because everything is still fun. I think working at night is like picking scabs. It feels lively to solve some problems before I go to bed. Or create some. (Same way with pulling a scab, right?) After lunch, Sharon and I drove to Culver City, to get my eyebrows done. I usually go to NYC for eyebrows. But I dont want to travel anymore, so I dont want to have a hair person in LA and an eyebrow person in NY. So, as a step toward simplifying my life, I did my eyebrows in LA. I liked the place immediately because there was a whole display of gray nail polish and I know gray is the it-color for fall, and I know no one is wearing it yet in Madison, so I had high hopes for my eyebrows. But they are uneven. Sharon tried to tell me they were okay, but good friends, really, dont do that. So in the end, she didnt. And Im going back to NY next time. I know youll say, Just find someone else in LA. Its not bad advice. In fact, this is what Sharon said. But Im upset about the eyebrows, about how it turned out. Its hard to make changes, even if the changes could make my life more calm. Its so easy to convince ourselves that the change is too difficult to make. For eyebrows, for a blog, for a career.

HARO Show off your wicked smahhts for free. Career Coach JobJenny
HARO Show off your wicked smahhts for free. Career Coach JobJenny How is it that I'm just learning about the amazing HARO(Help a Reporter Out)? You want to share your expertise with the world (and, thus, get lots of credit and attention for being a really smart whatever-it-is-your-so-good-at?) Go this minute and set up a profile (as a source) on HelpaReporter.com. From what I can tell, it's one of the fastest, cheapest shots you have at getting free publicity in mainstream media. And that, job seeker, would be a very good thing for you. HARO is this awesome service created by entrepreneur Peter Shankman. It launched as a Facebook fan page and exploded in popularity. To the point that it's now it's own company/website. One that invites reporters, bloggers, authors and other news sources to connect with small businesses and professionals looking to tell their tales, promote their brands (your brand, uh, would be YOU) and sell their stuff. Every day, HARO sends out three emails with a list of queries -- reporters looking for people to talk to about the specific topics they're covering. If you happen to see one that applies to you? You respond to the query (following the instructions listed --seriously, don'tscrew this part up or they probably will pass you right on by) and explain why you'd be a helpful source. If they agree, they contact you, you chat and POW! You've just landed yourself some free publicity, possibly in some MAJOR publication or on a major broadcast news outlet. Heck, even if it's a super niche publication, so long as it's in your area of expertise? It could be a very big deal in terms of helping you land your next job. And, it's f-r-e-e. So, yes. Bust a move over to HARO. I'm just getting rolling with it myself (And, admittedly, this makes me feel a tiny bit like I did as a kid back in the '80s, when we were the last family on the planet to get a microwave oven). Any which way, now I'm telling you. With the hopes that HARO is also news to you. AndI assure you, when (not if) I land something through HARO? You'll all be the first to know.

LinkedIn Profile Headlines Make it or Break it
LinkedIn Profile Headlines Make it or Break it LinkedIn Profile Headline: Make it or Break it If I see another userâs LinkedIn profile headline that says âUnemployed,â I am gonna scream!!! Listen up, people. âUnemployedâ is not a job. It is not a goal. It is not positive. It basically is shouting out to the world that you are in a bad place. Your headline should reflect your goal. Your target. It should summarize your background. Point you towards the future. Declare your career target. It shouldnât look back at real or perceived slights or failures, or your current situation. The first point of contact you have with online networks is how you are found in search results, and the very first thing they see is your LinkedIn profile headline. Do you really want them to immediately associate you with âunemployed?â Is that what you want them to take away? You havenât even told your story yet. And never will be able to because youâve already pushed them away with a negative LinkedIn profile headline. A headline is all about compelling someone to read more. Stick around a little longer on your profile. Make them want to know you more. Negative language in your LinkedIn profile headline only serves to push them away. And yes, they do stay away. My point is that there are better ways to indicate your interest in new employment opportunities without putting it into your LinkedIn profile headline. Instead, try including a call to action in your summary. Leave your LinkedIn profile headline to selling yourself and what you can do for employers. Your headline is your personal brand opportunity. But just as much as some people turn potential employers away from their LinkedIn profile headline with negative language, there are others who go the opposite direction. These are the people who use LinkedIn profile headlines that say âvisionaryâ or âexpert.â Even worse: âVisionary expert.â Pssst. Hereâs a secret: Anyone who has to TELL you that they are an expert⦠usually arenât one in reality. The REAL experts simply are. They donât have to try to impress you. They are secure in their background and credentials. So if you are one of those people who calls themselves one of those expert titles, knock it off. We are not impressed. Instead, you should be telling the reader about HOW you actually help companies, not that you are an expert at it. The HOW is the devil in the details, and also is really your signature brand or service that you offer. The best LinkedIn profiles are the ones that draw people in, not scare them away. Which side of that equation do you want to be on?
